Our Story

Where We Come From

Pelagic Helm grew out of a simple observation: too many businesses in Hong Kong were making consequential decisions — entering new markets, reshaping their teams, reallocating capital — without the benefit of an outside perspective that was both informed and impartial.

Founded in 2018 by a small group of consultants with backgrounds in corporate strategy, financial analysis, and organisational development, the practice was established in Wan Chai with a focus on mid-market firms. From the beginning, the name "Pelagic Helm" was a nod to Hong Kong's maritime heritage — a reminder that navigating open waters requires clear instruments, steady hands, and respect for the conditions you're sailing into.

Over the years, our team has grown, but the philosophy has remained the same: listen carefully, assess thoroughly, and deliver advice that clients can act on with confidence. We don't believe in producing reports that sit on shelves. Every deliverable we create is designed to move a conversation forward or support a real decision.

Today, Pelagic Helm serves clients across Hong Kong, mainland China, and Southeast Asia. Our work spans market entry, organisational redesign, and financial health assessment — three areas where we've built genuine depth and where we feel we can add the most value.

What Guides Us

Our Values

Clarity Over Complexity

We distil complex situations into clear, actionable insights. Our clients shouldn't need a consultant to interpret what their consultant said.

Honesty in Direction

If a path doesn't look sound, we'll say so — respectfully, but plainly. Our role is to help firms see the full landscape, including the parts that may be uncomfortable.

Respect for Context

Every firm operates in its own environment. We don't impose frameworks from elsewhere — we build recommendations that respect your market, culture, and constraints.

Our Standards

How We Work

Data Confidentiality

All client data is handled under strict NDA. We use encrypted file sharing and limit internal access to the project team only.

Structured Process

Every engagement follows a defined methodology — scoping, research, analysis, recommendation, and review — so nothing falls through the cracks.

Professional Development

Our team maintains relevant certifications and attends industry seminars. Keeping current isn't optional — it's part of how we operate.

Ethical Practice

We don't take on conflicting engagements. If there's a potential overlap or conflict of interest, we disclose it upfront.

Our Expertise in Context

Hong Kong's position as a gateway between East and West has always demanded that its businesses think with precision and adaptability. At Pelagic Helm, we draw on this commercial tradition to offer consulting that is grounded, practical, and responsive to the realities of doing business in the region.

Our market entry work spans industries from fintech and logistics to professional services and consumer goods. We understand the regulatory landscape of Hong Kong, the nuances of cross-border commerce with mainland China, and the considerations that shape expansion into Southeast Asian markets.

When it comes to organisational design, we bring a pragmatic lens. Restructuring shouldn't be an academic exercise — it should lead to clearer roles, more effective collaboration, and a structure that supports where your business is headed, not just where it's been.

Our financial health assessments are built for decision-makers who want substance over jargon. We present findings in plain terms, with visual summaries and benchmarking that make it straightforward to see where you stand and what might need attention.
